LATEST NEWS AND INFORMATION

SPRR Spring Picnic Time is Just Around the Corner
Spring is coming and with it the sun is beginning to shine, the smell of flowers and the ocean is starting to take precedence over that of the extra exhaust pipes from all of the snowbirds, and your treadmill running shoes are giving way to road and cross country shoes once again.  Yes, spring is coming.  The SPRR has decided to welcome the new and more comfortable running season with our Annual Spring SPRR Picnic.  This free event will be held on Saturday, April 10th starting at 10:00 AM at shelter #2 in Ft. DeSoto Park.  This is always a great event and a time for a little relaxation and fun after what can be a hectic start to the new year.  As always, there is no fee for this club event but we do ask that you bring a dish to pass so that there’s enough food for everyone.  The club will be providing and grilling up some tasty hamburgers and hotdogs once again as well.  There is no need to RSVP but we hope to see you there.

SPRR Grand Prix Sponsored by Fit2Run Updates - The Manatee River 5 Miler was the first race of the Grand Prix and took place in December 2009. All members participating had a great time and ran well. Don't worry if you were not able to run the race because we are scoring the top 7 out of 11 races in the Grand Prix. The leaders of the Grand Prix up through the first race are posted in the Grand Prix Leaders section. A complete list of participants and scores are posted on our race page.

The Bay to Bay 12K was originally included as the March race, but the race has unfortunately been cancelled.  Therefore, we are including the Florida Beach Halfathon in the Grand Prix. The race director, Chris Lauber, has agreed to give us 2 free race entries for including the race in the Grand Prix, and we will be raffling them off at our upcoming club meeting on February 11. You must be present to win! Chris has also agreed to give each of our members a $5 discount on the race entry for the Half Marathon and the 5K (not included in the Grand Prix). To receive the discount, you must pre-register by mail. Just deduct the $5 from the race entry and write on the entry form that you are an SPRR member. A link to the race website is also provided in the Official Race Schedule section. More details will be provided at the February meeting.

Summer is Coming and It'll be Evident on the Beach
- It could simply be wishful thinking but rumor has that summer is on its way.  Sure there are still a few months to go before kids are on summer break and sure we have a whole spring racing season ahead of us but we can be optimistic of what’s to come.  And speaking of what’s to come…grab those calendars and be sure to mark June 25th, July 30th, and August 27th as the three Fridays for the SPRR St Pete Beach 5k Series Races.  In addition to the awesome post race party and some great prizes and raffles, this year’s event will once again bring together a mass of ages and abilities in our local running community.  Don’t miss out on this wonderful chance to race on the beach once again this year and spend some much needed quality time with some family and friends too.  Can’t wait to see you there.
